Sydney Sweeney, who was one of the breakout stars on the HBO show Euphoria, just recently got her next big break playing a character in Sony's upcoming live-action Madame Web film.

As of now, there have been no other castings for the Madame Web film, but S.J. Clarkson has been confirmed to direct the Spider-Man spinoff while Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have written the screenplay, with Kerem Sanga having written a previous draft of the film. Because Madame Web is old, had no fighting abilities, and relied on her psychic powers in the comics, no one knows exactly how they're going to approach the film, but that won't matter as long as it's connected to the other Spider-Man spinoffs.

Deadline reported that Sweeney has been announced as the most recent casting in Madame Web, which already has Dakota Johnson playing the titular character. Details surrounding who Sweeney will play are unclear as of now, but those details will come out in due time. Sweeney was reportedly eager to join the film, as it is slated to be the first female-centric film in this cinematic universe. According to the outlet's sources, Madame Web's age and condition in the comics could lead to the project becoming "something else," but as of now the character is being regarded as Sony's Doctor Strange due to her aforementioned abilities.

Madame Web in the Ultimate universe in Marvel comics

What will factor into how this film does will be the performance of some of Sony's other Spider-Man spinoff projects that will be coming out beforehand, like the soon-to-be-released Morbius film as well as the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film. If they are well-received and financially profitable, then they've got nothing to worry about with Madame Web. Sony's live-action adaptations of Venom have been financially successful, but that had more to do with Venom's previously established popularity as a character more than anything else. If Sony wants a massive audience for this universe they're developing, they need to consistently put out good products for the fans.

It's why this specific cinematic universe that Sony is trying to get off the ground is bizarre. This is a cinematic universe made up of Spider-Man characters, and yet, as far as we know, none of these films as of now are going to have Spider-Man in them. That's going to be quite the obstacle to work around. As commercially successful as those Venom movies were, among the biggest complaints about them was that Spider-Man wasn't in them. They got away with it because, again, Venom has a strong fanbase. Sony's confidence that Morbius, Kraven, and Madame Web have that same popularity will more likely than not turn out to be wishful thinking.

Then again, it's not like the Marvel Cinematic Universe started out with a-list characters. No one was asking for live-action movies starring Iron Man, Captain America, or Thor back around the late-2000s. Fast-forward to 2022, and those guys are now considered among the most popular superheroes ever. Sony's definitely thinking out of the box with these movies, but as long as they have the right approach, there's a feasible path for them to build something similar to what Marvel Studios has.

Madame Web has no release date as of now.
