The Nintendo Switch has officially been released for a year, but the celebration of its anniversary was dampened when early adopters discovered that the console was deleting playtimes after a year. Although this was initially alarming, it now appears that the issue is only temporary and a system update for the playtime glitch is coming soon, although a specific date was not mentioned.

While the activity info on the Nintendo Switch wasn't displaying correctly the console was still recording in the background. Reasonably, many feared the data was lost and any evidence of those long Zelda play sessions was gone. For these gamers, this forthcoming update may be a relief, but those who encounter the glitch soon should know that the data will eventually return to normal.

Until the glitch is fixed, it’s good to know that the data will reset itself. It was previously revealed that the playtimes weren’t reset permanently; instead, they would disappear for 10 days and return on day 11. This is the same amount of time it takes for play activity to show up on the Switch profile, which may or may not be indirectly responsible for the glitch. Once this issue is resolved, many fans of the Switch may resume celebrating the one-year anniversary of the popular console. Considering Nintendo won’t release a Nintendo Switch 2.0 anytime soon, the success of this console is vital, so this glitch on its anniversary is rather unfortunate. At worst, this is just a stumble, not a step backward, although it could have been if the Switch was actually designed to delete playtime after a year.

The fix for the playtime glitch will soon be resolved, and in the meantime, gamers can be relieved that it will reset itself after 10 days. While waiting for the update to go live, fans of the Switch may want to check out this fan-made Nintendo Switch XL. It is an interesting concept at the very least, and something Nintendo may eventually pursue in future renditions of the popular console; hopefully, however, future consoles will avoid this playtime glitch.

The Nintendo Switch is available now.
