In the vast world of video games, there are various genres for different fans to rejoice within and play out some amazing scenarios. One such genre, and one of the more popular ones today, is the survival genre of video games. Survival video games are very true to its name, as players are to be hopeful in surviving whichever fictional world they are thrown into.

There are plenty of survival games out there; some either have stories along with their survival gameplay, while others may just focus on the world and gameplay aspects of the video games. One thing is certain though, and that is that survival games can produce some of the greatest narratives the gaming world has ever seen.

10 The Forest

Sons of the Forest has finally just been released on PC and fans of the game should never cease to stop and reminisce about the game's beloved predecessor, The Forest. The Forest is an amazing survival game that places the player in the shoes of a father who is traveling by plane with his son, Timmy.

Unfortunately, the plane crashes onto a remote island, and upon waking up, the player can see their son being taken away by an unknown figure. Players must survive the island all whilst attempting to look for their son.

9 Minecraft

Minecraft is quite arguably the most popular survival game there is, with players that aren't big fans of the genre still falling into the enjoyable gameplay loop that resides in the block-themed game. Minecraft doesn't have a narrative story that players can follow exactly, rather players will need to seek out all the fruitful lore there is out there in their randomly generated world.

Once players have put as much as they can together, they can find a foggy path towards what could be the game's story.

8 ARK: Survival Evolved

ARK: Survival Evolved is easily one of the greatest survival games out there, and that is without even considering the amazing story that ARK features. ARK places its players onto one of many different maps, with the first one in story-order being the Island.

From the start, players can delve into the incredibly deep story that ARK has, with hidden journals, secrets, bosses, cutscenes, and the different maps themselves. With all of that, getting through all of ARK's stories would take hundreds upon hundreds of hours!

7 Subnautica

Players with thalassophobia, or the fear of deep water, will struggle to get through the water-themed game that is Subnautica. That is because Subnautica places players in the place of a man who is seeking out a lost ship on an alien world during a time when humanity is currently attempting to colonize various parts of the universe.

Unfortunately for the player, they've been stranded on a planet pretty much entirely made up of water, meaning one deep ocean, constantly swimming, and most importantly, fighting off what lies in the deep.

6 This War Of Mine

This War of Mine is quite frankly one of the greatest survival game experiences out there. So much so that the video game was the first in the world to be added to a school's recommended reading list by a government.

This War of Mine doesn't actually feature superior gameplay, rather focusing more of its content through emotion and decision-making. Players are forced to attempt to survive in different families' scenarios during a devastating war. Players can even make their own survivors as well, but the preset stories are a must-play.

5 Grounded

Grounded is an Xbox exclusive survival game that any Xbox or PC player should get their hands on as soon as possible. Not only does Grounded provide players with a unique survival experience, but the game also has a curious story that drives its players to seek out every last detail.

Grounded puts the player in place of a kid who has been shrunk by a scientist and is now attempting to survive in a back-yard. Now that the game is complete, players can quest through the story of Grounded, and actually get one of two different endings in the game.

4 No Man's Sky

There is almost no doubt out there that No Man's Sky had an incredibly rough release when the game first was purchasable to the public in 2016. The game was very different from what was revealed at first, but now after years and years of development, No Man's Sky has finally achieved a level of gameplay that is just astonishing.

No Man's Sky forces players to confront the limitless reach of the universe as they crash-land onto a random planet. After fixing up their ship, players must now follow a quirky narrative into the complexity of the universe.

3 Valheim

Of course when it comes to Norse mythology, almost no medium can bare to be boring, not fun, or anywhere near uninteresting. Valheim stays true to that fact as it brings Norse mythology into the realm of survival video games.

In Valheim, Vikings, as ferocious as they are, have been sent to the Valheim realm in order to conquer it to make the realm livable. The player plays as a Viking that has already been killed in Midgard, so now they have a brand-new chance to prove themselves against the most feared enemies in all the realms.

2 Green Hell

Green Hell is an amazing survival video game that fans of The Forest will definitely fall in love with. That is said because Green Hell places players in the boots of anthropologist Jake Higgins after he finds himself lost in the Amazon rainforest.

Not only that, but if players take on the game's story, they will find that Jake is seeking out his wife who is also missing. Players must survive the harsh reality of the desperate jungle, and fight to save Jake's wife who is not only just in danger, but is also very sick.

1 Darkwood

Darkwood is certainly one of the more unique and interesting survival games out there, as the game also has a major horror aspect about it that will send shivers down anyone's spine. Darkwood also has a unique setting, as the game is said to take place within the Eastern Bloc in the 1980s.

An odd forest has taken over lots of land, and people inside have fallen victim to an illness that turns them into frightful creatures. The player is put up against this forest in Darkwood, and they must find a way to escape.
