The original Superhot stood out for its unique concept as a first-person shooter that only had time move when the player moved, and layered onto that concept was a metatextual, contemplative story. Thus, when its standalone expansion Superhot: Mind Control Delete was announced and released earlier this month, people immediately jumped in, only to discover the game has a replay waiting period baked in.

Originally, whenever players beat Superhot: Mind Control Delete, they had to wait eight real-life hours for the experience to reboot. This was meant to offer "a perfect time to sleep on the game you just finished," according to Co-Director Marcin Surma in an interview with Eurogamer. It led to possible save corruptions if a user's device went into standby mode, as well as complaints from fans who opted to use cheats to bypass the wait, so Mind Control Delete was patched to make it two-and-a-half hours instead.

Even with these complaints about the original ending, the new Superhot expansion has been largely successful given it had a one-week turnaround between reveal and release. It probably helps that Superhot: Mind Control Delete is free for owners of the original.

While Superhot is not the only game that uses the real-world user's attachment to push a fourth-wall breaking narrative, those elements combined with its action gameplay made for something truly memorable. Superhot surprise launched on Nintendo Switch three years after its release, though the standalone expansion has yet to make it to the hybrid console.

Superhot: Mind Control Delete is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
