SNES classic Super Star Wars receives a new lease of life in the form of a PS4 and PS Vita release, with the platformer scheduled to launch on Tuesday, November 17.

When Star Wars Battlefront releases tomorrow, developer DICE will no doubt be hoping to take the crown of the best ever Star Wars video game. However, the multiplayer-focused title faces staunch opposition to that claim, and not only from the previous Battlefront games. Now, one of the best Star Wars games of the 1990s is set to make a return, with Super Star Wars set to arrive on PS4 and PS Vita.

The game, which originally released on the SNES back in 1992, is also going to be re-released for Sony’s home console tomorrow, November 17. The game was already made available to Nintendo fans, as the game is on sale via Nintendo’s Virtual Console. However, it’s now clear from PlayStation that the LucasArts-developed game will get a new lease of life over on the Sony devices.

The iconic Star Wars franchise has received video game adaptations for decades, from early arcade machines and the Atari 2600 all the way through to modern day. Along the way, the series has received well-loved titles, with the Battle of Hoth one of the main movie scenes used in Star Wars games. Super Star Wars, meanwhile, is seen by many as one of the standout titles based on the sci-fi franchise.

If gamers are expecting an easy gaming experience, however, then Super Star Wars is not the droid you’re looking for. The title is a perfect example of Nintendo Hard, upping the ante in comparison to both the action in the movies themselves and in the video games that had come before it. Players take on the roles of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, taking on all comers, with the Empire the least of our heroes’ problems.

Whether the game will get a look-in with Star Wars fans remains to be seen. After all, releasing on the same day as the most anticipated Star Wars game in years may see the re-release getting dwarfed. Nonetheless, Star Wars fans looking for a quick fix on the go, or those who were not impressed with the Star Wars Battlefront beta, could get their hands on a very solid action platformer.

The release of Super Star Wars on PS4 and Vita proves to be an interesting conundrum, too. Nintendo has kept a decent stranglehold on some of its consoles’ best and brightest, although certain developers such as Rare and Capcom have managed to re-release games via digital stores and compilations such as Rare Replay. Perhaps other developers and producers will be able to push to re-release their games across a wider range of consoles in future.
