Earlier this week a rumor surfaced that claimed Nintendo's highly anticipated Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. would hit stores on November 21st. However, since the only piece of evidence was a small piece of cardboard, it was hard to accept the date as legitimate. Not to mention, the 21st was a Friday, and Nintendo typically releases all of their games on Sundays.
But, it appears that November 21st release date may in fact be correct, as a second source has substantiated the rumor. And while the original source for the rumor was little more than a placard, this second source comes from within Nintendo itself.
According to Go Nintendo, a banner on Nintendo France's website surfaced for a brief moment that included a full list of upcoming Nintendo releases. And on that list just so happened to be Super Smash Bros. Wii U with the same November 21st release date.
Of course, Nintendo France was quick to pull the banner and then issue a statement saying the date went up in error. But given the close proximity of the two release date "announcements", we're more inclined to believe this date is real.
Although some may cry afoul of Nintendo releasing a game on a Friday, but the company has shown they are no longer beholden to the trademark date as of late. In fact, all signs are pointing towards Nintendo moving to a Friday release-day pattern. Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, and even the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. are all slated for Friday releases in North America – a highly unlikely coincidence.
That's all to say that Nintendo is likely planning a November 21st release date announcement for Super Smash Bros., but a few marketing materials got out there earlier than planned. It's not an uncommon occurrence in the industry, but when it comes to Nintendo any leak is a big leak, especially when it comes to Super Smash Bros.
Of course, this could also be some big miscommunication and Super Smash Bros. is not releasing in mid-November. But honestly, until Nintendo says otherwise we're more inclined to believe the validity of the rumors.
