Leaks are almost an unavoidable occurrence within the modern gaming industry. Many of the people that are trusted to keep content a secret, almost always being contractually obligated to do so as well, betray the trust of their employers and taking the entrusted information online for a brief moment of fame. It appears that this is exactly the case for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game on the Nintendo 3DS.
Tying in perfectly with the already convincing 4Chan leak that allegedly unveiled the entire Super Smash Bros. roster, some videos have arrived from a YouTube user going by the name Izat True featuring two newcomers and a returning veteran. The two new characters in question are Bowser Jr. from the Mario series and Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles, and both look to be well suited for action. Meanwhile, the unrevealed and returning evildoer Ganondorf from The Legend of Zelda also makes his presence known.
What makes the original leak appear so convincing is the level of quality given to the actual characters featured in the videos. It’s very hard to create a fake that looks this legitimate, hence why we’re reporting on it. The artwork also matches up with the previous leak, as does the ‘ESRB0083’ username for the individual playing it, but fans should still take all of this with a grain of salt.
The individual responsible for posting the videos then took to Reddit under the username ‘Dubadubadubizatrue2‘, which appear to have been validated with a copious number of screenshots from the game on Imgur.
While on Reddit, the alleged spiller-of-beans stated that they could “attest” that there were still more characters that hadn’t been unlocked, but later backtracked on the claim stating that it was “only hearsay. Shouldn’t have said it back then. Maybe it doesn’t turn out as true. Sorry.” That said, given the layout of the initial roster featured in the leak, it’s conceivable that there are some additional fighters not present.
Sadly for Nintendo, these leaks appear to be genuine (or the result of one of the most well put together pranks in Internet history), and the Big N has even gone so far as to issue a statement. While not all that damming, when reached for comment on the footage by Game Informer, Ninty simply stated:
“We have nothing to announce at this time. For the list of announced playable characters for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS please visit: www.smashbros.com.”
It looks like fans may have to grow accustomed to having Bowser Jr. and Shulk joining the battle, the latter of which made our list of top five fighters we wanted to join the fray, and it appears that they’ll be joined by Dunk Hunt Dog, Dark Pit and Doctor Mario if previous leaks turn out to be true.
[UPDATE] The videos have been taken down as part of a “copyright claim by Nintendo of America Inc..”
