Since launch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has had a number of mods made for it. Typically these mods add new characters to the game's massive roster, like Waluigi or even Deadpool. And now Shrek, the world famous ogre, has been modded into the ambitious crossover fighting game.

The mod, made by modder Hefty, is essentially a re-skin of Ganondorf in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Shrek has Ganondorf's moveset and unfortunately lacks any voice lines from the film series. However, the mod is still impressive for what it is.

Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen Shrek modded into a video game. Shrek's status as an Internet meme makes him a popular subject for modders, and so we've seen Shrek added to games like Dark Souls 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And with a Shrek movie reboot on the way, it seems as though the character will stay relevant enough to keep getting modded into games for the foreseeable future.

While a Shrek mod is likely the only way Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players will play as the character in the game, it's not technically outside the realm of possibility that Shrek could be added as DLC. While extremely unlikely, we have seen some rather surprising additions to the Super Smash Bros. roster in the past, like Final Fantasy 7's Cloud, for instance.

Of course, the main thing keeping Shrek from ever being in a Super Smash Bros. game is that he's not a video game character. While there have been Shrek video games released on Nintendo consoles, it seems unlikely that Super Smash Bros. will ever give a roster spot to a character who didn't originate in a game or isn't strongly associated with gaming.

With the character being added to the game in an official capacity being a near-impossibility, those who want to play as Shrek in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will just have to settle for this mod.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
