Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boasts the most impressive character roster in the franchise, so it will likely take players quite some time to unlock every character. However, roster battles can be pretty difficult, especially for players that are new to the franchise. This can cause frustration when a new fighter quickly wipes the floor with whatever character a player is using, leaving the new challenger locked and the player's feelings hurt. Luckily, there's a way for players to quickly retry these battles, though it is fairly hidden within the game's menus.

To do so, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players will need to go into the Games & More menu, where they will find an icon of a set of double doors located on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. The doors will glow yellow when highlighted and show the title Challenger's Approach. Selecting this option will trigger a previously-failed challenger battle in the order of which they were failed. The challenger will appear before players have to select their own fighter, which should give a better chance to pick a solid counter.

Should players fail the battle a second time, they will have to play through the rest of the list of their previously failed encounters and wait out a brief cooldown period. Then, they will once again be able to attempt the battle and, hopefully, unlock the character. With practice, players should be able to unlock even the most challenging characters in the game efficiently. The notable exception is Piranha Plant, who takes a few more steps to unlock and won't be playable until early next year.

By utilizing this method and classic mode, which can be used to unlock characters like Dark Samus faster, players can pretty much pick and choose which fighters they want to unlock first without entirely relying on random encounters. There will still be some randomness for some characters, but it won't be nearly as bad.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been pretty popular since its release, with the title having even brought police officers together with players while responding to a noise complaint. Needless to say, it was one of the most anticipated games on the Switch, and it should keep players busy for quite some time considering the number of characters on the roster.
