Today's Nintendo Direct opened strong with the reveal of the next fighter coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Joining the game alongside an older Mii Costume, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's popular Blades Pyra and Mythra are prepared to be the next characters added to the growing roster.

The reveal was the first thing shown during the Nintendo Direct, immediately making good on fan expectations to see a new character join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While players may have hoped to see characters like Devil May Cry's Dante or Kingdom Hearts' Sora join the fighting game, both Pyra and Mythra have become icons of their own since the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Pyra and Mythra are set to arrive in March 2021, and the two characters will also be bringing a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 stage to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, while the premier showed off two characters, this will be one fighter, being able to be switched between quickly like Zelda and Sheik. Each form appears to have its own strengths and weaknesses, and unique final smash attacks depending on which of the two is out at the time of use.

Rex will also be joining Pyra in the form of her final smash, though the character is still only playable in Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Mii Costume Fighter at the moment. The short trailer didn't quite go in-depth with what either Pyra or Mythra's movesets will look like, but Nintendo does often showcase new Smash Ultimate fighters with more detail after the initial reveal. For now, players can expect to see more soon, and the new duel fighter should be arriving some time in March as a part of the latest Fighter Pass.

Interestingly enough, Nintendo has continued to deliver new fighters that aren't exactly the top of player requests for Super Smash Bros. Ultmate. However, considering the popularity of both Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and the characters Pyra and Mythra, the choices aren't exactly unexpected from the view of what might get fans excited.

The only problem that this new fighter brings to the game is that Smash Ultimate now has another sword fighter to add to the common complaint from fans that the variety of fighters has been continuing to suffer lately. With any luck, the next fighter to join Smash Ultimate will add a new twist on the familiar style that players have been asking for.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Switch.
