Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Nintendo's ultimate crossover game, bringing together characters from dozens of franchises in one great title. It's enough to make other non-gaming franchises envious, which is how Nickelodeon artists Tim Prendergrast and Kurt Snyder got an idea. The two, working together, collaborated to create what they've titled the "Super Nicktoons Ultimate" mashup poster. Befitting the name, it puts Nickelodeon characters into the roles of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's fighters.

The poster features dozens of Nickelodeon mashup fighters, from SpongeBob SquarePants as Mario to Rugrats' Angellica as Peach. The amount of authentic detail that went into each and every character is incredibly impressive. Both Prendergrast and Snyder clearly know both the Nickelodeon characters and the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighters that have been mashed together. For fans of both Nickelodeon and Nintendo, it's the ultimate crossover.

Behind the poster is a great story, as well. At Nickelodeon studios, employees hold events and parties to build community and have fun routinely. One of those events is an intra-company Super Smash Bros. tournament. For this year's event, Prendergrast and Snyder decided to make a small poster to put up for advertising. This first poster included 15 different fighters. When the pair shared the poster online, it was extremely popular and so the team decided to expand on it for fun.

The sad part of this story is that this is not an official partnership with Nintendo. Prendergrast and Snyder made this poster both for the company's Super Super Bros. Ultimate tournament and for fun. That means that while Nickelodeon can share the poster for free, it can't actually sell the poster for a profit. At least, it can't if it doesn't want to be sued. Fans can use the high-resolution image featuring Nickelodeon's most popular characters to create a poster of their own, though.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to be a spectacular success, in so many ways. While the Nintendo Switch-exclusive game may never be as popular as certain multiplatform titles, the cultural impact and all-audiences tone of Smash is unique in so many ways. Even SpongeBob SquarePants wants to be Mario.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
