The most recent Nintendo Direct has brought a huge amount of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate news to the forthcoming fighting game's fans, with one of the most exciting pieces of information being new playable characters like Castlevania's Simon Belmont and the Donkey Kong Country villain King K. Rool. In addition to these announcements, the title will also continue its tradition of including crossover materials, with Monster Hunter's Rathalos also being added.

As seen in the video below, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is going to use Monster Hunter's Rathalos as a boss in some instances, and will also show up as an assist trophy should players unleash it during a match, with the creature being the first character in Smash history to appear as both. As one might expect of the beast, Rathalos retains its ability to fly and blast an incendiary dose of fireballs at anyone standing in its way.

Interestingly enough, this won't be the first instance of Monster Hunter's Rathalos showing up in different franchise this year, as Final Fantasy 14 recently added a new quest line featuring a battle against the flying wyvern. At this rate, perhaps Capcom will decide to have the monster be featured in another crossover event for a separate IP before 2018 is over. After all, it is definitely good exposure for Monster Hunter World.

Circling back to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, though, Rathalos wasn't the only character that was confirmed to be an assist trophy during the Nintendo Direct showcase, as the Big N revealed that there will be Alolan Pokemon assists as well. As a matter of fact, a bunch of different Pocket Monsters were revealed to be in the game as assists, with Alolan Exeggutor, Ditto, Abra, Solgaleo, Lunala, Mimikyu, Pyukumuku, Vulpix and Alolan Vulpix, and Marshadow all making appearances.

Bearing all of this in mind, it's safe to say Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be packed to the gills with content, especially with the title bringing back every single playable character that has ever appeared in the franchise to the sequel. And with more than 100 stages to boot, it seems as if the next entry has definitely earned its Ultimate subtitle.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to release on December 7, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch.
