During Nintendo's recent E3 Direct, the publisher revealed the latest addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, announcing that Tekken mainstay Kazuya would be its 10th DLC fighter. Masahiro Sakurai noted that he'd be talking more about the character in a subsequent livestream, and that broadcast debuted earlier today.

The early look at Ultimate's newest entrant brought several new insights about Kazuya and his moveset, alongside revealing that he'll be available to purchase tomorrow, June 29. According to Sakurai, a lot of attention was paid to the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Tekken are very different fighting games, with the creative director wanting to ensure Nintendo captured what made the combat of Bandai Namco's iconic property so impactful.

He notes that Tekken is fundamentally centered around the idea of understanding space, knowing how far an opponent is from the player and where they should be to avoid or inflict damage. Super Smash Bros. Ultimateon the other hand, is more about location, using height and distance to play offensively. In turn, Tekken's attacks are slower while Smash Bros' moves are much faster. Sakurai wanted to cross the two franchises over in a way that made Kazuya feel like more than a skin, replicating Bandai Namco's gameplay while merging it with Nintendo's more frantic action.

The solution was to give Kazuya two different styles, with his standard moveset replicating his abilities from Tekken and his Devil's Power abilities lending him some Smash Bros. flair for smash attacks, mid-air jumps, and special moves. Showing this off, Sakurai highlights how players will be able to use Kazuya's Devil Blaster as a neutral special, offering a powerful ranged laser that can pass through enemies.

There's also his side special, Devil Fist, which allows the player to punch through an enemy. Performing it from close-range will even leave opponents stunned, allowing Kazuya to follow up with a range of devastating combos. As for his down special, it's known as Heaven's Door, and allows the fighter to grab a foe, fly into the air, and slam them to the ground in brutal fashion.

Another of Kazuya's abilities is Rage Mode, which will activate once the fighter's damage ascends past 100%. It'll only happen once per stock but will allow players to inflict increased damage and pull off a stronger variant of Heaven's Door known as Rage Drive. Rage Mode can wear off if players are repeatedly hit while it's active or they fail to connect with Rage Drive multiple times.

Kazuya's final smash is also shown. Titled Final Blaster, it sees the fighter fire a volley of devastating Devil Blaster lasers at enemies. It can be dodged, but Sakurai warns that it can KO opponents at 0% damage if it hits them close to the edge of the stage. Outside of his demon abilities, Kazuya's normal attacks harken back to his moveset from Tekken, including his Twin Pistons and Roundhouse to Triple Spin Kicks combos.
