Featuring every single character in Smash Bros. history (as well as a few all-new additions), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has one very big character roster. However, unlocking all 70+ playable fighters in the game takes some doing as just eight characters are available from the off. This includes Sonic the Hedgehog, who isn't available as a default character and must be unlocked.

The Easiest Way to Unlock Sonic in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Thankfully, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the more straightforward Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters to unlock. The easiest way to unlock the character is to complete the game's Classic mode as Nintendo mascot Mario. This method works on any difficulty setting. Mario is available from the beginning of the game meaning that players can instantly jump into Classic mode as the lovable plumber.

Classic mode features a series of themed bouts which will get increasingly more difficult as you progress. There will be a mini-game towards the end of it, followed by a tough boss battle. This will likely take players around 10 to 15 minutes to complete successfully. Once Classic Mode has been completed as Mario, players will have the chance to take on Sonic the Hedgehog in another fight. Beat the fast blue mammal and they'll unlock him as a playable character.

It's also worth noting that by completing Classic mode, players will also get some new spirits as well as snacks (which can be used to level up spirits). Spirits, in turn, can boost your fighter's effectiveness during battle, even offering resistance to some of the puzzles that show up during some battles. As such, it's worth going through Classic mode a few more times, not just to unlock Sonic the Hedgehog.

How to Unlock Sonic in the World of Light Mode

Alternatively, players can unlock Sonic the Hedgehog by playing through the game's World of Light story mode. Sonic shows up towards the end of the story mode and can be found in the Sacred Land. This means that players could be waiting quite a while to unlock the character and if they're strapped for time and really want to get to Sonic, the Classic mode method is the way to go.

How to Unlock Sonic Through VS Mode

Another alternative method to unlock Sonic the Hedgehog is to just play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate VS Mode. As players progress through the game's VS Mode completing battles and kicking the butts of gaming's most famous icons, they will unlock characters as they go. However, Sonic is quite far down on this list of "VS Mode character unlocks." The blue animal is the 17th character that you can unlock this way, with characters like King K.Rool being unlocked first, so again, this will take some time.
