Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already has a huge roster of fighters, but even more will be added to the ambitious crossover fighting game throughout 2019. This includes Piranha Plant, who will be the first DLC character, and the only one that players will be able to download for free. However, there is some confusion about how players can actually get Piranha Plant in the game.

There are two ways players can unlock Piranha Plant in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The first way is by buying the game digitally, and then a code should be sent to the email tied to whatever account was used to buy the game. However, if players purchased the physical version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate instead, then the method to unlocking Piranha Plant is a little different.

For those with a cartridge, they need to make sure the cartridge is in the Switch, and then go to the home screen. From there, highlight the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate icon and press the start button. Then scroll down to "Earn Points (Game Card version only)," at which point 80 My Nintendo Gold Points will be redeemed. This should also trigger an email with the Piranha Plant code to be sent. The email can take up to 10 days to send out though, so fans shouldn't panic if they haven't received their code just yet.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players can then redeem the Piranha Plant code, but they won't have access to the character right away. Unfortunately for anyone hoping to battle it out as Piranha Plant in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at launch, the character won't be available in the game until February 2019.

There's another catch that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players should keep in mind if they hope to get Piranha Plant for free in the game. If they bought the physical version of the game, they have to redeem their My Nintendo Gold Points by January 31st, 2019 to claim their code for the character. Otherwise, they will have to purchase Piranha Plant separately when he becomes available in the eShop.

Along with Piranha Plant, five additional DLC characters are coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2019. So far, only one more DLC character has been revealed, that being Joker from Persona 5, but more DLC characters will be announced in the coming months.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
