Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just recently added its first DLC fighter in the form of Piranha Plant, but Nintendo has at least five more DLC characters coming to the game over the course of the next year. We already know that Persona 5's Joker is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and now game supervisor Kumazaki Shinya has taken to Instagram to possibly tease who will be coming to the game next.

On Instagram, Shinya has posted images of the shield seen in various Dragon Quest games. While this could just be a coincidence, it does line up with previous rumors, leaks, and speculation that the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter will be none other than Erdrick, the name given to various heroes from the Dragon Quest franchise.

Having Erdrick from Dragon Quest added to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster makes a great deal of sense for a number of reasons. For one, the Dragon Quest franchise started its life on the NES, and the vast majority of new entries have also released on Nintendo platforms as well.

Secondly, adding Dragon Quest's Erdrick to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate could be used to boost the franchise's presence in the west. We've seen this work with Fire Emblem characters, and there's no reason why it couldn't work for Dragon Quest as well. Plus, with Dragon Quest 11 S coming to the Nintendo Switch, Erdrick's addition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate could help advertise that game specifically.

If Erdrick is indeed coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the next DLC fighter after Persona 5's Joker, then it seems to lend some credibility to the leak that supposedly revealed all of the planned DLC fighters. Not only did that leak name Dragon Quest's Erdrick as the next fighter after Joker, but it also said Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, Steve from Minecraft, and DOOM Guy from Doom were also in the works as well.

While Shinya's Instagram post can definitely be considered more evidence that Erdrick is in fact coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it's still far from a confirmation. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans will just have to stay tuned for an official reveal from Nintendo.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
