Update 6/14: The rumors were true. Banjo-Kazooie has been confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!

Ever since the release of Piranha Plant and Persona 5's Joker, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans have been waiting anxiously to see who the rest of the DLC fighters will be. We still don't have any official word on that front, but a new rumor making the rounds suggests that the duo collectively known as Banjo-Kazooie is the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC.

This rumor comes from Resetera, where users noted that a brand extension company Tinderbox listed Banjo-Kazooie as a client. It's possible that this has to do with the new Banjo-Kazooie figure that's being released, but others have taken it as a sign that the bear and bird are coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC.

While that may seem like quite the leap, a comment by proven industry insider shinobi602 has led fans to believe that Banjo-Kazooie coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is exactly what's happening. shinobi602 said, "Been a while since we saw Banjo in anything. Hope we’re in for a smashing good time." [emphasis ours]

rumor super smash bros ultimate next dlc is banjo kazooie

Since Banjo-Kazooie is a Microsoft IP, some may think it's impossible for Banjo and Kazooie to be the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters. However, Microsoft and Nintendo have developed a strong working relationship over the last few years, and Head of Xbox Phil Spencer himself said that he would like to see Banjo-Kazooie come to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

With Microsoft open to it, it's just a matter of Nintendo making it happen. Even though the Banjo-Kazooie IP is owned by Microsoft, the games are best known for their Nintendo 64 entries, and so it would be a treat for old-school fans to see them join the already-expansive Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster.

If Banjo and Kazooie are coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC, fans can expect the announcement to take place at E3 2019. We've already had some clues that Banjo-Kazooie will be at E3 2019 in some form, though then the question is whether such an announcement would take place at Microsoft's press conference on June 9 or the June 11 Nintendo Direct. Of course, that's assuming Banjo-Kazooie is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC, as there's still a chance that the next DLC fighter is someone else entirely.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
