Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has an absurdly large roster of fighters that represent all kinds of different video games, including some third-party characters like Solid Snake, Cloud Strife, and soon Persona 5's Joker. The appearance of third-party characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate opens the door for virtually any video game character to appear in the crossover fighting game as DLC, though fans can write off Devil May Cry's Dante as a possibility...for now.

In a recent interview with VG 24/7, Devil May Cry 5 game director Hideaki Itsuno suggested that before Dante could feasibly appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Devil May Cry game would have to release for a Nintendo console. And as it turns out, there hasn't been a single Devil May Cry game released on a Nintendo console to date.

"Well, that’s the thing. Devil May Cry has never been on a Nintendo platform. So it seems like the first thing to do would be to get Capcom to put Devil May Cry on a Nintendo platform in some way, shape or form – whatever game that might be."

Almost every single character on the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster has appeared in a game on a Nintendo platform in the past, with the notable exception of Final Fantasy 7's Cloud. However, Final Fantasy 7 is coming to the Switch, and as Itsuno pointed out in the interview, the Final Fantasy franchise has a "rich history" with Nintendo that Devil May Cry lacks.

Of course, the decision to bring Devil May Cry to the Switch isn't up to Itsuno, but rather the higher ups at Capcom. But with Capcom's admitted business plan to focus on remakes and remasters, it's really not out of the question that a Devil May Cry game of some kind, whether it be a port of the HD Collection or something else, could come to the Switch at some point in the future.

Even if that does happen, though, it seems likely that Nintendo has already locked in all of the DLC fighters it has planned for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Persona 5's Joker is the only one revealed so far, but there have been multiple leaks and teases to suggest that Erdrick of Dragon Quest fame is up next, followed by some other classic video game characters like Minecraft's Steve, DOOM Guy, and Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden. But maybe there will be room for Dante in the next Super Smash Bros. game.
