A reasonably popular mode in the past two Super Smash Bros. games has been the series' Stage Builder mode, which allows players to build stages at their own behest and create anything from developer-tier level designs to downright cutting room floor-esque stages. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released back in December, and had not come packaged with the mode, but with the game's most recent update, some Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Stage Builder designs are already NSFW. This caused Nintendo to apparently eliminate many of the inappropriate custom stages built by players.

In Version 3.0 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game would receive various gameplay tweaks, a video editor, the Joker DLC from the Persona franchise, as well as a Persona-themed stage, and the Stage Builder, among other adjustments. While Joker was certainly anticipated by many, there's no doubt that Stage Builder was also extremely anticipated, for better or worse.

Now, Nintendo has reportedly removed many of uploaded Stage Builder levels it has deemed unsuitable for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Going forward, it's highly likely that any further uploaded inappropriate creations are likely to be erased so that the Nintendo Switch fighting game can properly reflect that the title's contents deserve an "E" rating.

It's currently unclear if every single stage Nintendo has deemed inappropriate has been taken down. Moreover, it's uncertain whether every stage can be taken down going forward, given the possibility that some offensive stages can easily be missed. However, it appears Nintendo is trying its best to regulate Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Stage Builder mode so that the viewable uploaded stages are more in line with Nintendo's traditionally inoffensive values.

As could argue, it's likely for the best that Nintendo is taking action on this. Given that young children often have the propensity to play Super Smash Bros. games, it would seem wrong for them to be subject to highly suggestive and potentially abhorrent creations. It doesn't come as a surprise that Nintendo is acting on this, as it has provided other forms censorship in the past, such as when they removed the controversial Game and Watch animation in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a form of self-censorship. Suffice it to say, sometimes it's beneficial to have a sensitive eye to offensive behavior.
