The Nintendo Switch exclusive fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been available for just a matter of days, so players are still discovering things about it. This includes figuring out how to reduce online lag and improve reaction times to various Easter eggs. The latest discovery fans have made in the game is water damage.

In a Twitter thread of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Easter eggs, put together by journalist Tristan Cooper, the game's water damage feature is available to see. Water damage only applies to certain characters, for example, Fire-type Pokemon Charizard and Incineroar both take heaps of water damage, which makes sense as they're also vulnerable to the stuff in the proper Pokemon games. Eagle-eyed Pokemon fans will also notice that Charizard works hard to keep its tail above the water; when the flame of a Charizard's tail goes out, so do they.

The Inklings from Splatoon also take water damage as, despite being squids, they evolved to live on land and therefore cannot survive in water. Additionally, fans have pointed out that water thins ink (which the Inklings are made of), so it makes sense.

Another character who struggles in water is Sonic the Hedgehog. Hedgehogs can swim, and are in fact good swimmers, but they will quickly get exhausted and drown. This is perhaps why, in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, the iconic blue character can be seen wearing a life jacket as he jumps into the water. It may seem silly, but it is true to the canon of the characters.

Avoiding these characters on stages that feature water isn't much of a strategy compared to, say, picking a character that counters another one. But it is useful information to have for those unlocking the game's character roster.

The discovery of water damage is just one of many other Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Easter eggs that fans have found. Cooper's list also highlights the new Final Destination theme (it's just the main Smash theme but in reverse), and when Ridley performs the Final Smash move, players can see Samus' ship exploding in the background. Considering that the game features every Smash Bros. character ever (as well as a few new additions), this may only be a small percentage of all of the secrets that are waiting to be discovered.
