As most gamers will likely agree, last year was chock full of great releases, and the Nintendo Switch title Super Smash Bros. Ultimate surely found its way onto the majority of players' personal lists for the best games of 2018. Interestingly enough, it looks as if the crossover fighter was so highly coveted that it managed to cinch the top spot for Amazon's best-selling video game products of 2018.

As it so happens, there's quite a wide margin between Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's number one position on Amazon's best-selling video game product list and the next actual piece of software, as the spots of number two through 13 are reserved for the likes of PlayStation Store gift cards, Nintendo Switch screen protectors, Switch consoles, Switch Pro controllers, Xbox gift cards, and PS4 DualShock 4 peripherals. Should one exclude such wares from the list, though, Amazon's top five best-selling games of 2018 would be:

  1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  2. Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4
  3. Super Mario Party
  4. Marvel's Spider-Man
  5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's domination of Amazon's sales charts for 2018 may not come as much of a surprise to some, as it was already revealed a couple of weeks back that it only took eleven days total to break sales records, making it not only the fastest selling Switch game yet, but also the fastest selling entry in its series. With this being the case, SSBU has definitely had an incredibly successful debut, which will undoubtedly make its director Masahiro Sakurai proud.

Taking all of this into consideration, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's top spot as Amazon's best-selling video game for last year is certainly impressive, especially since it's a console exclusive that debuted at the tail-end of 2018 in December. Of course, pre-orders were likely factored into this as well. At any rate, it will be interesting to see if such high-performing sales figures remain consistent for the Switch title throughout 2019, or if there's a drop off coming around the bend. One incentive that could at least keep sales stable throughout the rest of this month may be the offer of Piranha Plant as free DLC to those who buy SSBU before January 31, 2019.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
