Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is already set to be the biggest entry in the series so far and possibly the biggest video game crossover of all time, with a roster of nearly 70+ characters. One aspect that keeps getting overlooked, though, is the confirmation that the game will feature 103 stages to battle on. That's already a hefty number but it looks like there'll be even more.

According to Japanese gaming magazine CoroCoro, there will be exactly 108 stages in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, meaning that there are still five stages left to be announced. While it's entirely possible that this could be a mistake on CoroCoro's part, there does seem to be some evidence that backs this information up.

For starters, the stage select screen for the game does have some notable gaps in the bottom row for five extra stages to be added, with hypothetically one space left over for a button that opens up a second tab for DLC stages. Director Masahiro Sakurai has stated in the past that not all of Ultimate's playable characters have been announced yet so it's entirely possible that the same applies for the stages.

The question then is whether these five additional stages are brand new or simply returning ones. Not every stage will be returning but certain fan favorites like Melee's Mute City and PokeFloats are notably missing and hotly demanded. Some fans are theorizing that these new stages haven't been revealed because they'll give away new characters, like a Spiral Mountain stage for Banjo-Kazooie. Or they could just be new stages from already confirmed franchises, like a new Donkey Kong stage to tie-in with K. Rool's announcement or a new Pokemon one to represent Gen 7. With still three months to go until the game's release, it's important to take all of this info with a pinch of salt until Nintendo or Sakurai make an official confirmation.

In recent news, the latest Nintendo Direct announced a Switch bundle that will come with a code for a digital copy of Ultimate and a special Super Smash Bros. branded Switch console and Joy-Cons. Isabelle, the adorable assistant from Animal Crossing will also be joining the roster as a unique character, which in turn led to a confirmation that a new entry in Nintendo's animal-filled life-sim franchise will arrive on Switch some time next year.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will release on December 7, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
