There's been a ton of chatter in regards to the final Nintendo Direct dedicated to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which revealed the game's final pre-launch characters and new features coming when the game launches next month. While most of the recent news pertaining to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sets up for future content after the game's launch, it appears there is still inspiration to be drawn from the franchise's history, with a few returning game modes to be included in the upcoming crossover.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be receiving three new modes inspired by the Nintendo Gamecube's Super Smash Bros Melee. The first mode is Century Smash, where players face off against 100 enemies that are much easier to take on. Next up is All-Star Smash, where players will go up against endless waves of all the game's fighters. Finally there's Cruel Smash, which also pits the player against endless waves of fighters, however they are much more difficult to knock out.

The latest additions follow the push from Nintendo to make the upcoming fighter the best Super Smash Bros. game ever. It was revealed at E3 this year that every character and map from the series' previous four installments would be included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the inclusion of new game modes was just one of the many new reveals to come from the direct.

Nintendo has also confirmed new amiibo figures are coming for the new 'Ultimate' fighters as well as the reveal of Ken (Street Fighter) and Incineroar (Pokemon) as the final two characters making it on the launch-day roster, as well as new characters arriving as part of season pass content. In addition, there will be a dedicated smartphone app arriving sometime next year titled Smash World, which allows players to use voice chat and share gameplay videos online.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was first teased back in March, before being properly titled at E3 this past June. It's been noted the game's director, Masahiro Sakuri had the goal in the early stages of development for every character ever in the massive crossover fighting franchise to make their way onto the Switch version of Super Smash Bros., and it appears this has extended into bringing back older game modes as well.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on December 7th for Nintendo Switch.
