Super Nintendo World is an area of Universal Studios Japan. Opened earlier this year, the area of the park allows people to "experience the Mushroom Kingdom in real life," as Shigeru Miyamoto producer and game director at Nintendo, described. The attractions include a real life Mario Kart Challenge, a dark ride featuring augmented reality technology that allows those who've suffered the wrath of the blue shell to inflict it back on their friends. There's also the treasure-hunt style attraction called Shadow Showdown, and the Yoshi's Adventure omnimover ride, where a fire suddenly broke out on November 23.

After guests had left Universal Studios Japan, where the Yoshi's Adventure ride and Super Nintendo World area are located, a fire was spotted by a member of Universal Studios' staff late on November 23. The fire was located on the ceiling of the ride's indoor section and emergency services were immediately called and no-one was harmed in the incident.

Following the discovery of the fire, and the arrival of emergency services Super Nintendo World remained shut for the entirety of November 24, reopening its doors on the 25th, though, those wishing to ride Yoshi's Adventure will have to wait a while longer, as that attraction is still under temporary closure and will remain suspended. The reopening of Super Nintendo World was confirmed by Universal Studio Japan's official Twitter feed.

Nintendo's foray into theme parks has met huge successes, though this fire isn't the first technical issue the company has encountered since the park opened its doors. Earlier this year, in August, a Goomba statue broke from the elaborately designed theming of the Mushroom Kingdom. Believed to be caused by high winds, the Goomba plummeted to the ground in a move neither seen before in the Super Mario games or in real life, causing another temporary shut down. The opening of Super Nintendo World was nearly delayed too, thanks to the COVID pandemic.

Due to the rapid and extreme success of Super Nintendo World, an expansion for the area of Universal Studios is already planned for a 2024 release. It will centre around a Super Mario and Nintendo fan favourite Donkey Kong. Speculation is already rising for what attractions, rollercoasters and rides could feature in the expansion. Fear not, Western Nintendo fans, your time will come, though you may be waiting a while. Universal Studios Orlando has plans to bring a Super Nintendo World to the US, though we likely won't be seeing an opening of that area until 2025 at the earliest.
