Earlier this summer, Sega announced what was believed to be a new Super Monkey Ball game after years of inactivity in the once popular franchise. Or so everyone thought, but once the trailer was shown it was revealed to be Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, a remake of an older game in the series. Today, Sega released a new trailer for the game showing off its newest bonus character.
Sega's most iconic blue buddy, Sonic the Hedgehog, is coming to Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD when it launches at the end of this month for $39.99. Sonic will be an unlockable hidden character that was not in the original Banana Blitz but is getting added to the HD edition. The trailer below gives some more information that can lead to some speculation that the inclusion of Sonic will be more than just a character skin.
In the trailer, we see Sonic flying through Monkey Ball levels that look like they may be custom built for the Sega Genesis poster boy. These levels appear to include all the staples of a Sonic game from speed boosts to rings (and the accompanying sound) to Sonic's bubble shield. Now, they could just be reskinned versions of other Banana Blitz levels, but that seems unlikely.
Either way, Sonic fans should be excited. The Super Monkey Ball franchise seems like a great fit for Sonic, with its balance of extreme speed and tricky platforming. The trailer also confirms that brand new costumes will be added to Banana Blitz HD that were not included in the original release.
It is a big day for Sonic news. Fans of the hedgehog and his friends will be delighted to learn that a new redesign for Sonic in the upcoming movie has leaked. Following controversy over the trailer that was released earlier this year, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was delayed, a decision which was credited to the additional work needed to redesign the character following fan backlash. Now, an image has leaked out that may or may not be a first look at the brand new design. However, it is equally as likely that these are fake fan images so take the news with a grain of salt.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD launches on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One on October 29, 2019.
