Many Mario fans' first experience with the character comes from the original Nintendo Entertainment System title Super Mario Bros. The game made platforming a genre that is still replicated to this day. While Super Mario Bros. has been an inspiration for many games to come, its design has been an inspiration for many other things.

Fans have found all sorts of ways to incorporate Mario into their lives. Universal Studios has even modeled entire attractions after Super Mario World. No matter how big or small, Mario finds his way in. However, one fan has taken their admiration of Super Mario Bros. to another level.

Reddit user solarSqueezer56, posting on the gaming subreddit, uploaded a photo of a fish tank. Inside the tank is a true to form Super Mario Bros. World 1-1, including the first blocks that allow Mario to become Super Mario, the steps to ascend to jump onto the flag pole to end the level, and even the castle at the end. The backdrop is that of the blue sky and random clouds, as well as the green hills that appear. While the floor of the tank is tannish-brown gravel, the signature blocks from the Mario franchise make up the bottom of the aquarium on the outside.

While many Reddit users thought it was a neat design, many nitpicks were to be had. Some users claimed a water level would have made for a better design. Others criticized that the fish had nowhere to hide. For the most part, the fish tank was well received with 417 upvotes at the time of writing.

While an older game, Super Mario Bros. is still considered a standard for how platform gaming is designed. With simple controls, and increasing in difficulty over time, the game has been a tent pole for gaming. With pixel art games, such as Stardew Valley and Undertale becoming popular, retro design is all the rage. Whether it's fish tanks or everyday pixel art, the classic style has made a comeback in a big way.

The Super Mario franchise has been around for over 35 years, with Nintendo celebrating the anniversary in 2020. After being put on the NES Classic Edition, the game itself found new life and has also found itself on the Nintendo Switch via Nintendo Switch Online. Whether it's merchandise, fan creations, or even the game itself, Super Mario Bros. has permeated into the zeitgeist for this era.
