Before players can ride Yoshi however, they will need to both find and unlock him. By following these steps, players can have their trusty dinosaur steed once more.

Mario riding Yoshi in Mario Sunshine

The first step to unlock Yoshi requires players to beat episode four of Pinna Park. This episode has players get rid of Snooza Koopas outside of the park to revive giant sunflowers. There isn't anything special that player need to do in the mission outside of its given requirements, so player will just need to beat it normally.

After the episode is complete, Shadow Mario (or Bowser Jr.) will be back in Delfino Plaza holding a Yoshi Egg. Players need to chase him down and spray him until he is defeated, similar to other Shadow Mario chases. After doing so, he will drop the Yoshi Egg.

The Yoshi Egg will not hatch right away, and it will display a small image of fruit. Players should seek the fruit market by the beach in Delfino Plaza and grab the specific fruit Yoshi's egg wants. Giving the correct fruit will cause the egg to hatch into a Yoshi, and from then on Yoshi will appear on the rooftops of Delfino Plaza whenever Mario comes back to it.

In Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshi has a new special ability where he can spit out fruit juice. There is a meter in the lower right side of the screen that displays how much juice Yoshi can spit. If Yoshi runs out of juice, it will eventually disappear, so Yoshi needs to be fed additional fruit.

Different fruit will change the color of a Yoshi, and these colors have different effects on its juice that turns enemies into different types of platforms. The color differences are:

  • Orange Yoshi (Pineapple or Papaya) creates stationary platforms.
  • Pink Yoshi (Bananas or Coconut) creates ascending platforms.
  • Purple Yoshi (Durian or Pepper) creates forward-moving platforms.

Even if players don't use their juice spray, the meter will degrade over time. This means that players need to make sure to feed their Yoshi in order to keep it around. Touching deep water will also cause Yoshi to automatically disappear.

Super Mario Sunshine is now available as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
