Nintendo’s E3 2017 presentation was definitely a contender for the strongest this year, with reveals of titles like Metroid Prime 4 and a new Kirby generating plenty of excitement over the brief 25-minute viewing experience. One of the biggest announcements, however, was the release date for Super Mario Odyssey, the hotly anticipated core Mario game for the Nintendo Switch. Super Mario Odyssey will release in 2017, which is huge news for Switch owners everywhere and an incredible one-two punch for Nintendo following the success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild earlier this year.
Nintendo capped its E3 2017 presentation with a gameplay demo of Super Mario Odyssey, however, which unveiled a few core gameplay concepts that weren’t public knowledge before. One of these new features is exciting for fans of in-game character customization, too: Super Mario Odyssey‘s coins can be used as currency in different shops, allowing the Italian superstar to acquire different amusing outfits.
The stream didn’t reveal much beyond the first iteration of what the coin transaction system in Super Mario Odyssey would look like, but it appears there will be different kinds of currency for Mario to collect and that each of these currencies will be accepted in different shops. Earlier in gameplay, coins resembled their traditional versions as Mario collected them, but his stop in a shop revealed that there would be purple, triangular coins for him to collect as well.
The ability to customize Mario is likely going to be a major hit with fans, and Super Mario Odyssey looks like it will be taking the Breath of the Wild approach to reimagining a beloved franchise – a lot of Super Mario Odyssey’s gameplay looks completely different from what fans have come to expect from a Mario title, but it also looks fresh and fun.
Those eager to experience what the new Mario has to offer certainly won’t have to wait long, either. Super Mario Odyssey is releasing before the Holiday season of 2017, which should give gamers plenty of time to enjoy New Donk City before a new swath of games get released and their schedules become much more hectic.
Super Mario Odyssey will be released as a Switch exclusive on October 27, 2017.
