As expected, Mario made an appearance at Nintendo Spotlight during this year's E3. The company revealed more details about Super Mario Odyssey, a globe-trotting 3D adventure title that places players at the helm of a massive airship, aptly called the Odyssey, in yet another effort to rescue Princess Peach. Alongside the reveal of the new details, Nintendo confirmed that three new amiibo will be available for purchase.

Super Mario Odyssey hopefuls can pick up figures for the title's three main characters -- Mario, Peach, and Bowser -- all of whom are decked out in game-specific attire. Since Odyssey centers around Mario's endeavors to save Peach from Bowser's sinister wedding plans, Mario and Bowser are seen sporting a white suit and white top hat, and Peach is in a lovely wedding dress and tiara. Where Bowser has a longer purple bowtie on, Mario rocks a shorter, more conservative one in red.

Nintendo also confirmed that the new bundle of amiibo figures will add costumes to Super Mario Odyssey and reportedly assist with gameplay. Additional, previously released Mario amiibo will be compatible with the upcoming game, but Nintendo didn't speak on any further details at the time of announcement.

But what can players expect to do with these pint-sized trinkets? What exactly is Super Mario Odyssey all about? In plain terms, it's something quite out of the box for the long-running franchise, at least based on what was shown in the announcement trailer. Mario can now interact with humans on the streets of a Big Apple-adjacent metropolis called New Donk City, which is, admittedly, one of the stranger names included in a Mario game. Play isn't confined to just the city streets, though, as Odyssey comes packed with underwater, prehistoric, and desert levels as well. And it'll all go down in Mario's airship, the Odyssey, which explains the game's name.

The mustachioed main man can also inhabit human bodies and inanimate objects through his newly sentient cap-companion. Now named Cappy, Mario's hat can be thrown onto other characters, opponents, cars and trucks, and random items to transform him into something completely new. If a player is yearning to become a Tyrannosaurus rex, they can in Super Mario Odyssey. The same can be said for a Mario tank, a Mario Bullet Bill, and a Mario Goomba. This will undoubtedly come in handy as Mario tries to throw a wrench into Bowser's plan to marry Peach.

The hype for Super Mario Odyssey is growing at a rapid pace, with the announcement trailer amassing 22.5 million views at the time of writing. That makes it Nintendo's second most popular video thus far, bested only by the Nintendo Switch reveal clip debuted in March of this year.

With the inclusion of three white-suited and wonderful new amiibo, which will join the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild champion amiibo later this year, intrigue is destined to grow more intense as the official Super Mario Odyssey release date approaches.

Super Mario Odyssey is scheduled to release on October 27 for the Nintendo Switch.
