The latest Nintendo Direct presentation focused primarily on video games, but it also featured some news about the Super Mario movie. For the uninitiated, Nintendo has been working with Despicable Me studio Illumination to create an animated Super Mario feature length film, and now we know that movie will release on December 21, 2022 in the US. And when it does, it will feature none other than Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario.

Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the Super Mario movie voice cast alongside its release date, confirming Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan Michael-Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Additionally, longtime Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will have various cameo voice lines in the film.

Now that the Super Mario movie release date is in sight, fans can start expecting the marketing push to ramp up and more substantial information to come out. This effort likely won't start until 2022, but keep an eye out for teaser trailers and the like. In the meantime, here is the full voice cast for the Super Mario movie so far as confirmed by Nintendo and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Miyamoto noted that Mario will be talking "a lot" in the Super Mario movie, but how exactly Mario sounds with Chris Pratt's voice remains to be seen. Pratt has extensive history with voice acting work, having voiced one of the main characters in Pixar's Onward just last year. Pratt is leading a pretty stacked Hollywood cast, showing that Illumination and Nintendo are truly going all out when it comes to this second attempt at a Super Mario feature-length movie.

In the meantime, the casting of Donkey Kong-related characters is interesting. Donkey Kong and Mario are heavily connected as characters, as Mario was the protagonist of the original Donkey Kong arcade game. But seeing Cranky Kong in the game is a bit of a surprise, as he was a character originally created for the Donkey Kong Country games developed by Rare.

Those curious about Cranky Kong and Donkey Kong in the Super Mario movie will just have to watch the film when it hits theaters late next year.
