With the Super Mario Bros series being the one gamers want to see most adapted to film, it’s understandable that people are concerned about how the current pandemic is affecting the production of the upcoming animated Super Mario movie, and wondering if a delay might be incoming. While that question remains unanswered, it’s looking like the film is still coming along nicely.

Deadline reports that the film, a collaboration between Nintendo and Despicable Me and Minions studio Illumination Entertainment, remains in “active development and production” despite the coronavirus situation, which has caused several delays across the film industry. In Illumination’s case, though, it’s been able to keep on operating due to how its team was already working remotely when COVID-19 hit.

In fact, these past two COVID-filled months have apparently been an “extremely productive, innovative and creative time at the company,” according to a source close to the studio. This suggests that major setbacks for its current projects (which include sequels to its 2015 hit Minions and 2016 film Sing, along with two original titles) aren’t in the cards just yet.

Currently slated to come out in two years’ time, the new Super Mario movie will be the franchise's first big screen adventure since the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros movie. This time around, Nintendo is more heavily involved, with Shigeru Miyamoto himself serving as the film’s producer and staying “front and center” in its creation, according to Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.

Super Mario is slated to release in theaters in 2022.
