Super Mario Maker is a Mario game like no other. It hands creative control over to the player, giving fans the tools to bring out their inner Shigeru Miyamoto. Considering its popularity, it's no surprise that Mario Maker 2 has seen over 20 million courses uploaded. While Mario Maker 2 on the Switch is still going strong, Nintendo has made the decision to wind down its support for the original Mario Maker for Wii U.

Mario is enjoying a banner year, celebrating his 35th anniversary with a number of limited-time releases and collectibles for fans to enjoy. Super Mario 3D All-Stars broke a digital sales record on the Switch, with fans excited to play Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy again (or for the first time). But, not all the news out of the Mushroom Kingdom is quite as peachy.

Mario Maker on Wii U was released in September of 2015, and fully made use of the Wii U's tablet, making course design easy. After five years, however, Nintendo is bringing support of the game to an end. On March 31, 2021, Mario Maker players will no longer be able to upload new courses, however, Nintendo makes it clear that fans will still be able to play courses uploaded before the service discontinuation. The game will also be removed from the Nintendo eShop on January 13, 2021.

Mario Maker 2 saw its last major update back in April, but the game will likely be supported for years to come, given the popularity of the Switch, so fans won't need to worry about Mario Maker 2 shutting down any time soon.

While it is sad to see Mario Maker for Wii U wind down, with so much Mario going on this year, fans have a number of ways to get their fix.

Super Mario Maker for Wii U will be available until January 13, 2021.
