Fans got their first extended look at Super Mario Maker 2 last month, revealing plenty of new features like the angry sun, a race car, and more layered on top of the core experience from the first game in the series. However, one element that stuck out during the Nintendo Direct was a limitation preventing friends from matchmaking together online. Surprisingly, Nintendo addressed this concern during their E3 2019 Treehouse live demo and had some good news to share.

During the live demo, veteran Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka revealed through his translator that the team is currently making changes to how players matchmake with friends in Super Mario Maker 2. Unfortunately, no other details were given surrounding this revelation nor was it explicitly revealed as to when these changes would be taking effect. With the game hitting store shelves in a couple of weeks, it's implied that this change will be added through a post-launch update.

While couch co-op has always been available for friends, many fans were more disappointed in the reasoning Nintendo gave for limiting online matchmaking to randoms only. The restriction was initially put in place because Nintendo believed it gave players who teamed up with friends an unfair advantage on the global leaderboards.

Thankfully, whenever the update does arrive, players will finally be able to team up with friends to take on all of the new content that game has to offer. This includes the brand new Super Mario 3D World content and the Coursebot and Course World modes where the bulk of the gameplay will be. Regardless, Nintendo has made it clear that any players who own the game and want to play online will first need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Hopefully, the rest of the odd online limitations will be smoothed out soon after launch as well.

Super Mario Maker 2 is set to release June 28, 2019, exclusively for the Switch.
