Keegan-Michael Key revealed that his role as Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie will include a bit of a musical interlude. In fact, he may not be the only one, if comments from others involved can be taken at face value.

Key spoke about his time recording the voice of Toad for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and it sounds like he had a ton of fun with it. Fans have already gotten a taste of his performance in the recent Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer, and opinions seem pretty unanimously favorable. But it turns out that audiences may get more than expected thanks to Key's self-proclaimed theater nerd status. It's time to hear those dulcet Toad tones sing.

In an interview with Variety, Key fielded a question about whether he'd get to flex his musical chops in the highly-anticipated movie, and his answer was more than encouraging. "He does," he said when asked if Toad sings. "I got to improvise a song in Super Mario Bros., which was an absolute blast. That was just a stick of fun, that whole thing." It looks like Netflix's hidden Christmas gem Jingle Jangle won't be Key's only chance to show off his musical prowess, and that's definitely a good thing.

"I was working on the voice with my partner and trying to find the voice through the internal journey of the character," Key continued, speaking more on the voice he used for Toad. "And then with the directors [Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic], we sprinkled some things in, we moved it around." It seems pretty clear that he's not just phoning it in with this role and, in fact, wants to put in the work. While he's not technically a voice actor, he does appear to understand that it's more than just walking into a booth and talking as himself. He went on, saying, "There was something about the timbre. I wanted it higher and higher and higher. And that's where we ended up, and I'm really happy with where we ended up."

Key isn't the only one who might get a musical moment in the film, however. Jack Black, whose Bowser voice has already delighted audiences, mentioned something similar when speaking at New York Comic Con. "I did bring some of my heavy metal roots," he said of his role. "Bowser is kind of like a heavy metal rockstar, a big, strong and scary rockstar. And I did a little bit of rocking. I think you'll be surprised to see that Bowser has a musical side. After the movie comes out, I might take it to Broadway." That's certainly one way to get audiences hyped up.

Does this mean The Super Mario Bros. Movie will have full-fledged musical sections? Or will the aforementioned moments merely serve as throwaway gags? Either way, the prospect of hearing Black show off his well-known musical talent alongside Key in character as the high-pitched Toad sounds too good to pass up. Now if only Chris Pratt's divisive Mario voice was a little more pleasing to fans, maybe they could take the whole cast on the road.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to release on April 7th, 2023.
