The side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. have made quite the comeback in the past few years. With a portable Mario Bros. releasing for the Nintendo DS a few years ago, and more recently New Super Mario Bros. Wii landing on the Nintendo Wii, it’s easy to see why we fell in love with the original side-scrolling duo to begin with. That’s why it should come as no surprise that Nintendo is already working on Super Mario Bros. 3DS for the Nintendo 3DS.
The officially announcement spawned from the latest edition of ‘Iwata Asks,’ where Shigeru Miyamoto claims that Super Mario Bros. 3DS is already underway.
This announcement came after Miyamoto mentioned the importance of keeping the series fresh with every new game that was released, and stating that adding new things to every version was integral to keeping the games feeling fresh and enjoyable.
Miyamoto didn’t miss the opportunity to tease Nintendo fans, and confirmed that Super Mario Bros. 3DS is coming:
“… In the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system.”
A new Mario game has very rarely been a bad thing for Nintendo or its fans, so everyone who plans on purchasing a 3DS this year can look forward to a new Mario Bros. title sooner rather than later.
The question now becomes: how long it will be before Nintendo releases some screenshots, video, or, dare I say, a release date? Miyamoto was kind enough to ensure fans that the company won’t make it a goal to torture the gaming world with a prolonged wait:
“I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new Super Mario Bros. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS.”
Super Mario Bros. on the 3DS has some serious potential to capitalize on the 3D capabilities. Imagine Bullet Bills flying off the screen, or Bowser’s fire-breath literally searing off the eyebrows of the player.
Okay, maybe that last example only has serious potential to open Nintendo up for a lawsuit, but either way Nintendo and Miyamoto know what they’re doing, so expect some revolutionary effects in Super Mario Bros. 3DS.
Those hoping for a 3D Mario game similar to Super Mario Galaxy 2 shouldn’t be too concerned that the best has already passed, since Nintendo has already confirmed that they plan on bringing both 2D and 3D Mario games to the Nintendo 3DS.
Look forward to more news concerning Super Mario Bros. 3DS at this year’s E3.
