Super Mario 64 is beloved by many and considered one of the best Super Mario titles of all time. The game is practically infinitely replayable and arguably still holds up to this day nearly 25 years after it first released. Players continue to enjoy it for speedrunning purposes, mods, and more. Most recently, a fan-made Super Mario 64 project has appeared online for PC that brings the game up to date with a bevy of new features and updated visuals.

Super Mario 64 was most recently made available inside of the enjoyed and well-received Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the Nintendo Switch. But as of March 31, 2021, the game is no longer for sale (other than a few retailers selling the last in-stock copies). So fans are back to only being able to play Super Mario 64 on older consoles--or in the case of this fan-made project--through special creations from indie developers.

Creator MorsGames has made Super Mario 64 Plus and shared it online with fans. The download is available right now for anyone to play for PC, and a video is live on YouTube explaining what the game is. Not only is it the base Super Mario 64 game for PC that many have come to know and love, but it is also filled with additional features.

One of the more interesting features of Super Mario 64 Plus is its permadeath mode that can be toggled on and off, which can bring an extra challenge to the game. The game also has some features that would make it closer to Super Mario Odyssey like an additional moveset for Mario and even the ability to continue playing after collecting a star, which allows players to truly explore like never before. For many, combining Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey would make a perfect Mario title, so these features in one game make for an excellent idea.

Along with allowing the player to do things that Super Mario 64 could never do before, the game also simply has enhanced features that improve the experience like more responsive controls, a better camera, 60 FPS, bug fixes, and more. A lot of this is what players were hoping for when Nintendo revealed Super Mario 3D All-Stars, as opposed to the game mostly being a port to the Nintendo Switch.

Along with the game itself, Super Mario 64 mods and fan-made versions of the game help keep the game alive. Of course, many would be happy to play the standard experience itself if Nintendo were to keep it on the Nintendo Switch without removing it from stores. Many also wonder if this new Super Mario 64 Plus game will be taken down by Nintendo, as The Big N has seized fan-made experiences in the past. But for now, the game is quite the adventure to take advantage of.
