There are those games which come along that help to push the industry further. Doom pioneered the modern first-person shooter. Half-Life helped perfect the formula by introducing more streamlined story aspects and environment interactivity. And Super Mario 64 showed it was possible to take a simple platformer and elevate it to new heights with open-level design. Recently, it was discovered that the classic Nintendo 64 game is now playable on Xbox, and now it seems everyone's favorite plumber has managed to reach new platforms.

Not content with bouncing around on the original N64 console or the Xbox, it appears that someone has managed to make Super Mario 64 available to play not only onto PCs, but has even made it available on mobile devices as well. The PC version is built into a browser, and is not some demo or fan recreation, but the full official game complete with cutscenes, which people can play for free right now. On top of that, saving is apparently possible, but it's likely that files will be lost once browser cache has been deleted. For mobile users, it's available on all major devices and platforms, such as Android and iOS. There's even a Mac version as well.

While the web browser version is a simple case of just loading up the website and using the keys on the keyboard, playing Super Mario 64 on mobile requires players to connect a controller. Outside that, it still seems to be a fairly straightforward affair to get it running on an Android device or an iPad.

The N64 and Mario 64

These versions are not officially licensed by Nintendo, so it's entirely possible that these versions may be pulled by the company within a moment's notice. Luckily, Mario 64 is a popular one of the series for speedrunners, so if anyone does want to play the PC or mobile versions, now would be a good time to test out those running skills.

With the original game coming out in 1996, its impact on that era and beyond has made the installment something of a phenomenon. The fact that a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 sold at auction for more than $1.5 million shows just how valuable this game has become over time. So long as Nintendo doesn't force these new versions to be taken down, it could open up opportunities for newer generations of gamers to play what was a very influential part of gaming history that's still enjoyed and beloved to this day.

Super Mario 64 was released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64.
