Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is one of the first big Nintendo Switch exclusive releases of 2021, set to launch later this month for the home console/handheld hybrid. Since it's a re-release of the critically-acclaimed Super Mario 3D World from the Wii U, many are expecting the game to be a surefire hit once it hits the Nintendo Switch on February 12. And while the vast majority of publications have yet to publish their Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury reviews, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has revealed its score for the game.
Famitsu has scored Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury with an overall score of 36/40, which is less than the 38/40 score that the Wii U version earned back in the day. It's unclear what the reviewers didn't like about the game compared to the original, but praise was given to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury for its inclusion of online play. Reviewers were also impressed with the Bowser's Fury experience for its challenges and replay value. Not to mention 36/40 is still a great score, translating to a 90 percent rating.
Overall, it seems safe to say that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is going to be at least as good as the original Wii U game, if not better. Not only does it have the added Bowser's Fury expansion, but Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury makes other gameplay changes as well. Notably, it speeds up the gameplay to give fans a faster-paced experience when compared to the Wii U original.
Another big change Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury makes is in regards to the co-op experience. Besides the aforementioned online multiplayer support, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury adds co-op to the Captain Toad bonus levels. Previously, the Captain Toad levels were purely single player experiences, but now they can be played by up to four players at a time.
Without further details, it's unclear why Famitsu gave Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury a lower score when compared to the Wii U original, but its status as a re-release probably contributed to that. According to VGC, Famitsu did something similar when it reviewed New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which is simply an enhanced port of New Super Mario Bros. U that collected the base game with its post-release content.
In any case, the Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury release date is right around the corner, so fans should have plenty more reviews on the game to read sooner rather than later.
