Mario. The name alone conjures near limitless mental images of the portly plumber's many adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom. Appropriate it is, then, that Nintendo has seen fit to release an extravagant number of Super Mario 3D Land screenshots and a brand new trailer to help fans while away the days until Mario's 3DS debut.
There is an argument to be made that a Nintendo system isn't really a Nintendo system until it gets its first Mario game. Though Nintendo's first party titles -- specifically N64 remakes Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D -- handily best the majority of games on the 3DS, we have yet to see the Big N really flex its development muscles on the system (no, Steel Diver does not count). Thanks to Super Mario 3D Land, that all changes November 13th.
Nintendo's resident genius, Shigeru Miyamoto, discussed his intentions for the new game in an interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata (watch it on the Wii's Nintendo Channel).
"I wanted to make [Super Mario 3D Land] like the user-friendly 2D Mario games as much as possible, while keeping the 3D Mario game features intact. So rather than saying it's a new 3D Mario game, it's more like a 3D Mario game that plays like a 2D Mario game."
"As you play, you can keep going as long as you don't try anything difficult. But it gets challenging if you're willing to try different things. It has a dual structure."
That philosophy is readily apparent in the latest Super Mario 3D Land trailer. In addition to showing off the varied level design that draws liberally from Mario's past games, the new trailer also offers up our first good look at the Boomerang Suit in action. Check it out below.
The 3DS has had more than its fair share of ups and downs since launching early in the year, but fans who have managed to hang in there are about to be rewarded. Super Mario 3D Land is the most important game yet for the young system, and with Mario Kart 7 following closely behind, and Kid Icarus: Uprising (hopefully) releasing early next year, the software drought that plagued the 3DS is fast fading into memory. Now, if we could just find out when the remaining Ambassador games will be released!
Super Mario 3D Land releases November 13, 2011, exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.
