What can be said about Mario that hasn’t been said a hundred times already? The face of video games, the original gaming mascot, Nintendo‘s claim to fame – whatever title you want to give him, you know that when you see a Mario game, you’re guaranteed quality. And from the way the 3DS has been received by the general public since its launch, it seems as though a quality Mario title is just what it needs. Thankfully, that desired title is on its way in the form of Super Mario 3D Land.
The title is just a few days from launch, so Nintendo has released one more trailer to showcase what the game is about. And they did so in the best way possible – no talking, no explanation, just gameplay.
Have a look for yourselves.
The opening tells you everything you need to know. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach for the gazillionth time, and you have to go save her. What a surprise. We get to see some of the levels of the game, which have a simplistic, retro design, but also appear to be rather tricky to maneuver through. Also glimpsed are a few of the power-ups, including the Boomerang Suit, which can be traded to others via the 3DS’s StreetPass system.
It’s always nice to see Mario’s brother Luigi in action, though whether he has his own set of levels to play through or is just another playable character is up in the air. Bowser also makes an appearance, with a Tanooki tail of his own, for some unexplained reason. Perhaps there’s more significance to the tail in the Super Mario 3D Land logo than first expected…?
Whatever the case, this game looks like a successful attempt at capturing the retro style of the original Super Mario series, while still making it seem fresh and new in 3D. Though the 3D Mario titles are all excellent in their own rights, there hasn’t been a game since Super Mario 64 that can claim to feel like the original side-scrollers. This should certainly be a game to please the old-school gaming crowd, while still drawing in new players of all ages.
