Super Mario 3D Land DLC Possible

When talking to investors this past week, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata implied that Super Mario 3D Land could get paid DLC in the future. This will no doubt be surprising to longtime fans, but could be welcome if it does come to fruition.

Nintendo has always been late to the party in terms of adopting modern technology like online networks, HD visuals and downloadable content. The Big N has clearly seen the light and the fact that Sony and Microsoft are leaving them in the dust. Nintendo is now looking to change all that with the recently announced Nintendo Network which will be the platform to deliver any possible DLC.

During the most recent Q&A session with investors Iwata stated that titles like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land could sell very well for the foreseeable future. Nintendo is also aware that given the current gaming market staying in the public eye is a constant battle, and failing to remain relevant means a drop in sales. Offering DLC for these games could change all that:

"This will not only give us new profits but will lengthen the life of a product, in that it will never be out of fashion and can keep attracting public attention as long as many people play it."

The idea of DLC is a simple one, and one that the industry already knows about. It's true that Super Mario 3D Land (see our review) will have no problems selling to new customers, however it will be interesting to see Nintendo's approach to paid DLC if they choose to implement it for this game. The first game to offer paid DLC for the 3DS will be Fire Emblem 3DS.

This isn't actual confirmation that Super Mario 3D Land will get DLC, though it is very promising news none the less. It would be amazing if the new 2D Mario title had DLC in its future.

The Nintendo Network and a future of DLC for Nintendo titles will launch once the Wii U releases at the end of 2012. Super Mario 3D Land is available now for the 3DS.
