A little game by the name of Super Auto Pets has been taking off lately, thanks to some streamers and content creators who have been absolutely obsessed with the game.

And now, what used to be an adorable little auto-battler populated by animal emojis and a niche community is now the battleground for auto-battler veterans and tower defense gamers to reign supreme. And, like other recent releases, the Equipment in SAP is sort of the star of the show. So, to help out with those who are struggling and don’t know what to do, let’s go over the Food/Equipment in the game, and talk about what to look out for.

16 Apple: As Basic As It Gets

First up is the Apple, a tier-one food that's about as iconic as it gets for video game food. It shows up alongside Honey for rounds one and two. It’s not like +1/+1 is bad or anything, and it’s even worth grabbing in those first two rounds, but there’s rarely a scenario where it's a worthwhile buy after that. The only scenario's that even sort of make sense later on are:

  • Buying it with three gold left to feed a Worm, Seal, Beetle, or Ladybug.
  • Running two to three Rabbits, since the Rabbit's ability (think of it like a Pokemon ability) gives extra health to Pets that eat Shop Food.
  • The player is running an early Black Cat.

15 Cupcake: AKA Padded Muscles

Next is the Cupcake, the only temporary stat buff out of all the food. That said, there are some pretty worthwhile uses for a temporary +3/+3, otherwise, the Hatching Chick wouldn't be so useful.

For example, all the Food-based animals that are worth feeding an Apple to, are also worth feeding a Cupcake to. Secondly, sometimes +3/+3 is all it takes to come out on top for the next battle, especially in the earlier rounds.

14 Honey: The Lifeblood of Horse Builds

It might seem odd to rank a tier-one Food above a tier two, but the Honey just has more practical applications. First off, a 1/1 Honey Bee can make all the difference in the early game fights.

Secondly, summoning the Honey Bee triggers tons of abilities from other Pets such as the Horse, Turkey, Shark, Kangaroo, Dog, Ox, Snake, and so on. And third, throwing Honey on the last unit in a team basically turns any Draw into a Victory, thanks to the Honey Bee spawning counting as having a unit left alive.

13 Chili: The Unsung Hero Against Deer, Scorpions, & Rooster Chicks

Jumping all the way up from tier-one to tier-five, the Chili is next. Now, giving any Pet the Splash Damage (no, not the company) might seem like a big deal, but remember that Splash Attack only does five maximum damage to the unit behind the one that’s hit.

This is insanely good against Scorpions, Deers, Melon Armor, and Rooster Chicks, but not much else. It’s good, but it's not the weakest choice of its tier.

12 Steak: All It Needs Is One Good Swing

Finally, the first tier-six Food ranking, and it's the Steak item. Steak is basically a better version of the Meat Bone item, but it only applies for one attack per battle, rather than every attack.

That said, it’s a fantastic item to put on a unit that’s only being kept around for scaling, such as a Rabbit, Monkey, or Penguin. The Steak gives them a chance to actually contribute to the fight.

11 Meat Bone: Steroids For Scrawny Pets

While Steak is the better version of Meat Bone statistically, Meat Bone is superior overall, simply because it has a lot more rounds to be used, being a tier two-item and all. Plus, let's be real, meat on the bone is iconic, which is why it always shows up in anime and games like Monster Hunter.

In the late rounds of SAP, most fights are dictated by a series of one-hit KOs, but in the early to mid-game, Pets are hitting each other multiple times more often.

10 Salad: Literal Rabbit Food

The Salad, while randomly distributed, is a good buy, but only if the player likes their current team and isn't about to sell any of them. That said, the next multiple distribution Food item to appear is the Sushi, and that doesn’t show up until two tiers later. And, the Salad's value skyrockets from decent to amazing if the player is currently running a Rabbit in any capacity.

9 Mushroom: The Iconic Item Of Troll-Builds

Mushrooms have always been an iconic veggie, which is why there are multiple Mushroom Pokemon. The Mushroom item, in particular, was a bit of a mystery for a while when SAP first started getting new players.

By this point, players have mostly figured it out, and they use the Mushroom as a way to bring back Tigers/Snakes that have gotten sniped or to get double the usage out of their Deer, Mammoth, or Eagle.

8 Pizza: Just A Better Salad

It’s funny, while Salad is absolutely the healthier option, it’s a common opinion that Pizza is the more delicious choice.

And, apparently, SAP’s devs agree with that sentiment, because the Pizza item is just a better version of Salad. So, for all the reasons Salad is good, Pizza is too, but even more so.

7 Sleeping Pill: Way More Applications Than One Might Think

How crazy is it that an item that literally KOs Pets is one of the best in the game? It just goes to show that SAP is a deeper game than a lot of people might expect. Just to name a few examples (of the many) ways to use the Pill:

  • On an Ant, Flamingo, or Mammoth they'll give their “Faint” buff permanently.
  • The Turtle "Faints" to give the unit behind Melon Armor early.
  • Both Spider and Eagle summon the next tier of Pets before it should be possible.
  • When used on the Pet in front of an Ox, it triggers its ability, giving the Ox Melon Armor and +2 Power permanently.

6 Pear: The Apple's Cooler Cousin

Random buffs are cool and all, but nothing beats actually being able to designate where the buff goes. The Pear is just a better version of the Apple, but +2/+2 is not just slightly better than +1/+1 in SAP.

With a Black Cat that +2/+2 becomes +4/+4, on a Worm that gives a total of +3/+3, and with a Rabbit that gives +2/+3. Apples usually aren’t worth buying past round two, but a Pear is almost always worth it.

5 Sushi: Again, Like Salad, But More Food To Go Around

What would people expect the tier five Food, Sushi, to do, since salad gives two animals +1/+1 randomly?

Well, it gives three Pets +1/+1! The problem is, by the time tier five Food is showing up, +1/+1 isn’t going to mean much. Again, this Food item is mostly for those running Worms, Rabbits, Chickens, Seals, and so on.

4 Canned Food: The Ultimate Investment

Too many people are sleeping on Canned Food. While there’s no way to “make” higher tier Food items show up early, as there is for Pets by combining three of them into a level two unit, Canned Food can still show up right at round seven.

And, if it does, players should either invest in it or freeze it. One Canned Food doesn’t do much. But, once two or three are used, players will immediately notice that they can just grab Pets from the shop and run them in their team without any scaling investment.

3 Melon: A Big Ol' Shield

Finally, it has come down to the top three Food items. And, it’s quite likely that no one will be surprised at the top three, as they are the most obvious picks. The bronze medal might surprise a few people though, as it puts Melon below Garlic. The reasoning for this is as such:

  • While Melon blocks up to 20 damage on its own, no animal is really doing 20 damage per hit until around round seven or so, while Garlic reducing every hit by two damage is consistently useful up until this point.
  • Garlic directly counters most summon builds while Melon counters one big hit or a Scorpion.
  • Once Melon Armor is popped, that’s it, it's gone for the round, while Garlic is there until the animal is KO’d.

Melon is amazing in the endgame, but it isn’t quite as universally beneficial as Garlic.

2 Garlic: What Turns A Pet Into A Tank

Super Auto Pets - In-Game Garlic Item PNG Overlaid On Image Of Whole Garlic Clove

Let’s go over all the ways Garlic can save a run early on:

  • It counters summon builds, as all the early summoned units do between two and five damage, which turns to one and three max per hit.
  • It absolutely works for damaging effects like Hedgehog or Badger, making it more viable to try out those builds.
  • It makes support-type Pets tankier, allowing their abilities to trigger more, such as the Camels.

The Garlic is just the best defensive item in the game until the late rounds, and even then, it’s a fantastic substitute while players are waiting for more Turtles+Pills to or Melons to show up in their shops.

1 Chocolate: Basically A Rare Candy

Super Auto Pets - In-Game Chocolate Item PNG Overlaid On Image Of Chocolate Bar Unwrapped

Was anything else ever going to be number one? Of course, it’s the Chocolate Food item. A piece of Chocolate showing up is the difference between:

  • A Turtle only gives its Melon Armor to one Pet behind it or two.
  • An Octopus just having some tanky stats or doing five damage to all enemies before every attack.
  • A Rooster spawning one Rooster Chick, two, or three.

And those are just a few examples. Abilities in SAP are so vital to late-round wins, and Chocolate makes that possible.

Super Auto Pets is available now and free-to-play on both PC and Android Devices.
