The 2013 Microsoft media briefing is kicking into full gear here at E3 2013 with the announcement of something new and different for the Xbox One: games. First, Microsoft surprised us by bringing back the classic, combocentric fighter Killer Instinct. Then, followed up by not only introducing a new IP, but inducting a previously PlayStation exclusive studio into the Microsoft family with the new, open world shooter Sunset Overdrive.
Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price took the floor promising an experience not unlike current MMOs in that the experiences and challenges can change daily and new events will be dictated by the community of players. Price expands on this by explaining:
“It’s not just an open world game, though, it’s a living world game. It’s fast-paced, traversal driven and explosive.”
The trailer is colorful, loud and fast — it certain grabs your attention. The premise appears to be playing off the current zombie craze, but replaces hordes of shambling, bloodthirsty corpses with hordes of evenly-paced, bloodthirsty mutants. Not that that’s a bad thing. We see a lot of Insomniac’s whimsical art style and signature humor, which is what we’ve come to expect of the studio. Luckily, their humor is typically topnotch. Mix in some outlandish gun play, ziplining and a touch of the standard parkour and you’ve got Sunset Overdrive.
Sunset Overdrive doesn’t has a release date quite yet, but is an Xbox One exclusive. Expect it to release sometime after the console launches this November.
