Late last month Microsoft gave Xbox One owners a 24-hour, no limit demo of Sunset Overdrive that was meant to increase interest for Insomniac Games’ new exclusive. And while many did talk about Sunset Overdrive coming out of the demo, it seems like enthusiasm for the game has died down considerably.

For our part, Sunset Overdrive is one of the must-play titles on Microsoft’s new platform, offering frenetic combat, scathing wit, and gorgeous design. The game was so enjoyable, in fact, that we wished there was more story missions in the retail package.

Lucky for us, Insomniac Games has just announced The Mystery of Mooil Rig, the first piece of story DLC for Sunset Overdrive. The new content is slated to release on December 23rd and will retail for $10 standalone, or gamers can pick it up as part of the Sunset Overdrive Season Pass for $20.

As far as the new content is concerned, The Mystery of Mooil Rig sends players to an oil rig off the coast of Sunset City and features the requisite allotment of new NPCs and enemies. Once on the oil rig players will try to assist the warring workers, who have unfortunately found themselves face to face with a swarm of OD (Overcharge Drinkers). Much like in the main game, it’s up to the player character to help the rig workers by completing a series of quests, which likely will culminate in a battle of some sort.

In addition to new story, this first DLC also offers a new selection of weapons, amps, traps, and Chaos Squad missions to keep players plenty busy. Major Nelson teases one of those new weapons, the rivet gun, in the latest episode of Sunset TV, but outside of that Insomniac is keeping pretty quiet about the add-on content.

However, since Mooil Rig does take players to a sea-locked playground, Insomniac thought it only appropriate that they add two new, water-based traversal moves to the game. These new moves are called the water dive and the water slam bounce, and they will help players keep their style meter going as they dash across the surface of the sea.

Although the Sunset Overdrive DLC does seem to be a bit limited in terms of its scope, it’s going to be hard to pass up an opportunity to return to Sunset City. Sunset Overdrive is a game that more people should play, and for those that did give it a chance there is more content on the way.

What do you think of this first Sunset Overdrive DLC? Where would you like to see future DLC story missions go?
