Sackboy has become quite the Sony mascot in recent years. Not only did the character gets his own kart racing spin-off in the form of LittleBigPlanet Karting, but he was also selected to be a playable combatant in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The stuffed protagonist is certainly no stranger to the limelight, and rumor has it that the lovable hero has yet another appearance scheduled in the third installment of the LittleBigPlanet franchise.

According to VG247, an inside source has confirmed that Sony has given the go ahead to begin development on LittleBigPlanet 3, but this iteration will not be coming from series creator Media Molecule. Instead, Sony allegedly approached the British studio Sumo Digital for this sack-tastic undertaking. Word is that MM is not working on the project because it's preoccupied with the PS Vita exclusive Tearaway, as well as another mystery project, but both Media Molecule and Sony feel as if Sumo is more than capable of producing a quality title.

For those who are unaware of Sumo Digital's past accomplishments, the developer has a very sporadic list of titles to its name. The latest noteworthy game to come from the developer was Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed, but the studio is no stranger to the LittleBigPlanet franchise either — recently finishing work on a patch that allows PS Vita owners to use their handheld as a controller in LBP 2.

Furthermore, VG247 claims that the game has been in development for “well over a year,” which means that fans may get a sneak peek at LittleBigPlanet 3 in the not too distant future. No specific platforms were name dropped for LBP 3, but with the PlayStation 4's grand unveiling evidently on the horizon, it's entirely possible that Sony may want to show off a few games to accompany its new console's reveal. That said, it may be a safer bet to look forward to Sony's inevitable E3 2013 press conference.
