A brand new indie horror game that looks like it is taking some inspiration from PS1 and PS2 survival horror classics, like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, just got an announcement alongside its first trailer. The name of the game is Summerford and the grimy art style and camera angles look like they came straight out of Silent Hill 2. For survival horror fans looking for a throwback, this is awesome news.

Summerford is developed by Noisy Valley Studios, a three person development team of family members who all grew up in in rural England. The game is based on locations they grew up near like Isle of Wight and the Cotswolds. It is set in an abandoned rural English town in 1986 where player character Sam gets separated from her friends and has to find them by exploring Summerford. The music and bits of gameplay shown in the trailer are reminiscent of any of the first three Silent Hill games, but the developers are trying an approach that will "[modernize] some of the more archaic elements of those games, such as controls and UI."

In a Reddit post announcing the game, the developers stated, "We're trying to create an English village that feels real, so while Summerford was a reasonably pretty area in the past, we're trying to develop something less like the classically beautiful English villages you see in most media and make something a bit more real. That is to say, it has less world heritage sites and more fish and chip shops."

The Silent Hill franchise is known for its disturbing monster design that goes beyond simply being creepy. The creatures in Silent Hill act as representations the characters subconscious, inspired by the protagonists' fear, guilt, and greatest weaknesses. But Summerford is less interested in that type of psychological horror according to the post.  The developers said that Summerford  is specifically taking influence from more classic horror like the first Silent Hill or Resident Evil that focuses on making the player feel isolated.

In a world where the classic Resident Evil games are getting remade into modern classics, with Resident Evil 3 coming out very soon in April, this type of throwback feels like it's meant to appeal to a different subsection of horror fans. The Resident Evil remakes aim to introduce new players to a classic school of game design while Summerford appears to directly appeal to gamers who still love and play those late 90s and early 2000s survival horror games.

Summerford is scheduled for release later in 2020.
