Summer Time Rendering is a story about Shinpei Ajiro, a high schooler who visits his hometown, the Awajishima island, for the first time in two years following the death of his childhood crush, Ushio Kofune, who drowned by the beach after saving a little girl from getting swept by a violent wave. At first, Shinpei simply comes in order to put a close to a very dear chapter of his life. But the more he learns about the truths surrounding Ushio's death, the stranger everything seems to be. So he takes it upon himself to look for an answer, talking to countless people, visiting various places, and formulating different theories as to what happened.

Several people close to Shinpei and Ushio suddenly become suspects in his mind, but much about the situation makes them hard to gauge. Not to mention that Ushio herself was acting out of character prior to her death. Just when he ponders about what actually happened that day, a familiar figure appears and shoots Shinpei in the head. Shinpei is dead. Shinpei opens up his eyes, and he is now back on a boat going to Awajishima island. He looks at the time, and it is the morning of July 22nd, the day he visited the island for Ushio's funeral. Shinpei Ajiro has gone back in time.

Aside from being a thrilling murder mystery, Summer Time Rendering also incorporated elements of a time loop narrative into the already riveting story. There are numerous anime that have used the concept before, with one of the most notable being Re:Zero. But aside from the obvious difference in genre, with one focusing on action while others in mystery, Summer Time Rendering offers much more delicate rules regarding its time loop.

It's impossible to talk about the time loop without giving up some major spoilers for the story. Rather than be entirely beneficial to Shinpei as he works to solve the mystery at hand, this looping ability seems to be much more detrimental at times. The ability comes with a massive cost, complicating the story even further, and exponentially increasing the stakes for Shinpei.
