Games Done Quick is one of those rare gaming events that not only sets speed run records but also often results in painful yet funny memes. This year’s Sumer Games Done Quick event will be delivered online.

For those who are not aware, Games Done Quick is a popular charity speed run event that is typically held in-person. The most recent Games Done Quick event managed to raise an incredible $2.75 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The event also benefits speed runners, who are given a large platform for the event and often walk away with additional fans. Traditionally, the event is spread out across several rooms, with each room having a speed runner sitting on a couch with a few commentators and an audience behind them. The event is streamed live, and donations are called out in real time.

Now it has been announced that this years Summer Games Done Quick will be held online, as was the case earlier this year with Awesome Games Done Quick 2021. As expected, the change was made due to COVID-19. The official date announced for the event is July 4 until July 11. Game submissions open at the end of today and will remain open till the 11th of April. Nominations for host judge volunteers begin at the end of today as well, but close abruptly on April 5. General volunteer submissions open on April 9. On May 17, the full schedule for the event will be released. The dates for Games Done Quick’s next event, Flame Fatales are still to be decided.

Many events over the last year have had to resort to online-only delivery. This has happened widely across America and other countries impacted by COVID-19. Another recent victim of the online event was Comic-Con 2021. Much of the entertainment industry has all but closed-up shop while they wait for COVID-19 restrictions to ease.

While many fans are sure to be disappointed, the community will likely understand the importance of maintaining COVID-19 restrictions. Games Done Quick is clearly doing everything they can to ensure the safety of its speed runners, volunteers, and audience.

Some fans might be happy to see the event online again. Unlike Comic-Con or other cancelled events like Lover Fest, Games Done Quick is an event that translates easily to an online format. The online events have been on-par with their physical counterparts so far, at least in terms of amount raised.
