In a year marred by events being delayed or cancelled altogether, Summer Game Fest is not going to back down. In fact, Summer Game Fest is returning in just a few months, this June.

The Summer Game Fest first appeared last year and was organized and hosted by Geoff Keighley after he left his previous gig hosting E3 over disagreements around the direction for the event. In the end, E3 2020 never came to be, leaving Summer Games Fest as a sort of defacto replacement and spanned from May through August. The event saw the announcements of new games, demos being released, and a constant trickle of trailers.

And Summer Game Fest is coming back for 2021, this time starting in June and promising a "concentrated global showcase" that may imply it is dialing its scope back to be more similar to traditional game conferences that cram all of their reveals and presentations into a window of just a few days. The announcement comes just shortly after the Entertainment Software Association confirmed that E3 would be moving online this year, and would be free for all attendees despite rumors saying otherwise.

Summer Game Fest stands to have a successful year if the big uptick in viewers for The Game Awards 2020 is any indication. Little else has been announced about the event, so not much is known about what the concentrated format will look like or what publishers or games fans should expect to see at the event. Last year's event saw a wide variety of participating developers and publishers, from updates about the then-upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 to indie showcases that highlighted smaller titles in one large presentation.

It will be interesting to see how Summer Game Fest and E3 sharing a month plays out, as the events being that close to one another could result in publishers splitting their announcements and trailers between the two events, which could cause both events to feel a tad underwhelming. However, there are also many titles that fans are eagerly anticipating more information from. One of the events giving more information on the highly anticipated Elden Ring or a look at the second part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake would give it a huge leg up on its competitor. There is no way to know which event looks more stacked until they start sharing what may be included, but whichever way it shakes out, June stands to be an exciting month for gamers.

Summer Game Fest 2021 starts this June.
