Only a few days after the release of its official R-rated trailer, The Suicide Squad is double-dipping into fans' excitement as director James Gunn has just shared the more toned-down preview. As if that weren’t enough, Gunn’s tweet came with answers to frequently asked questions he gets concerning the movie.

The Suicide Squad is DC’s second swing at turning the villainous supergroup into a successful property after 2016’s Suicide Squad was butchered into a Deadpool clone, according to director David Ayer himself. Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn hardly fared any better, but Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is looking like a much-improved take on the ragtag bunch, with King Shark’s dad bod literally devouring everyone’s attention thanks to Sylvester Stallone’s voice acting.

However, unlike most movies that get several trailers before release, The Suicide Squad’s “green band” trailer is pretty different from last week’s preview, something Gunn specifically pointed out because considers the opposite to be an annoying industry practice. Aside from not being the bloody mess that its uncensored cousin is, The Suicide Squad’s new trailer features more screen time for the ever-present John Cena, whose upcoming Peacemaker series was created by Gunn.

Fans also get a closer look a the bro chemistry and a more dramatic presentation to The Suicide Squad team before they're assembled for their next world-saving mission, with Idris Elba’s Bloodsport (not to be confused with Deadshot or Zack Snyder’s Deathstroke) again looking like the real squad leader. Gunn also took the opportunity to clarify that the movie was completely shot on IMAX and, therefore, that’s the optimal way to enjoy it. The filmmaker also guaranteed to one fan that, for plot purposes, it’s OK if he didn’t see Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

Despite featuring many returning actors playing the same characters from Ayer’s film like Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), The Suicide Squad looks to present them in a very different way that finally manages to give DC movies the much-needed identity they need to truly separate them from their Marvel counterparts. The way things are looking, Gunn's Suicide Squad might just get that Guardians of the Galaxy charm going for it, especially considering the titular villains have so little competition nowadays.

Despite the excitement for Gunn's The Suicide Squad, there are still a number of vocal fans petitioning Warner Bros. to release Ayer's director's cut of his original film. The movement recently gained momentum in the wake of Zack Snyder's Justice League successfully debuting on HBO Max.

The Suicide Squad will release in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
